Landfill gas
At a Winslow, Indiana landfill facility, we generate electricity by capturing gas emitted from decomposing trash and using it as a fuel source to power two generators. In total, about 2,000 homes can be powered by the 3.2 MW of energy generated at the facility.

Solar
We have two 2-megawatt (MW) universal solar projects in Evansville, Indiana; one on Highway 41 near North High School, which also includes 1 MW of battery storage, and another near Oak Hill Cemetery on East Morgan Ave. in partnership with the City of Evansville. When combined with a 50-MW facility that became be operational in 2021, these solar projects now power more than 12,000 homes per year.

Renewable Energy Credit (REC)
For every megawatt hour (MWh) of renewable power produced, CenterPoint Energy receives a Renewable Energy Credit (REC). Since mid-2008, we marketed these RECs to other parties including REC brokers and other utilities. The revenue received from the sale of RECs is credited to our retail electric customers to reduce their total bills. For more information about the portion of generation portfolio that is delivered to electric customers, visit the Electric System page.
